What is New Media?

"New Media" is a catch-all term that can include any media produced or distributed electronically, but even this isn't broad enough as radio is both electronic and definitely not new media. Analog forms of entertainment, like cellulose film, vinyl records, novels and magazines are "old media" as opposed to CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray, video games, web video, blogs and web comics which are "new media". However, traditional "old media" can become "new media" if it is streamed online, available for download or podcast.

More than any specific medium, "new media" expresses an idea that the old-regime, the established ways of producing and distributing entertainment media, are no longer the only game in town. New technologies and new cultural awareness offer the opportunity for new distribution methods and new projects previously "unmakeable".

"New Media" is the frontier of media production, and the rules have yet to be written. The successful will help to establish the new status quo and bring in the next "golden era" of media.
