Networking
"Everyone says 'hi'."
- David Bowie
It's not what you know, it's who you know - or, perhaps more accurately, it's who knows you. Even if you are the most talented guitarist to ever strum a chord, it won't help your career much if nobody knows you exist.
Networking is so important that there are entire companies and job descriptions devoted to gathering information and contacts - knowing who is doing what and when. And I'm not referring to journalists, I'm referring to agents and managers. These crafty individuals make it their business to know as many people as possible and to make sure their clients' names and faces get to the appropriate movers and shakers. Their livelyhood depends on it.
